Every year, more than 14,000 patients are diagnosed with life-threatening blood cancers—like leukemia and lymphoma—or other diseases for which a stem cell transplant may be their best or only hope of a cure. The authority for the programs that support these patients expired September 30. As a resident of [insert city, state], I am writing to ask for your support of the reauthorization of the C.W. Bill Young Cell Transplantation Program (Program) and the National Cord Blood Inventory. Every year, more than 14,000 patients are diagnosed with life-threatening blood cancers--like leukemia and lymphoma--or other diseases for which a stem cell transplant may be their best or only hope of a cure. The authority for the programs that support these patients expired September 30.  The House has passed a reauthorization bill (H.R. 2820), so it is now up to the Senate to ensure that both programs are reauthorized.

The federal authorization provides funding to recruit new adult volunteer donors and collect additional cord blood units that are made available through the national registry.  With this continued federal support, the registry now includes nearly 12.5 million donors and more than 209,000 cord blood units. Because of the support of these programs, nearly 68,000 individuals have received a life-saving transplant since 1987.  Stem cell transplants are the only hope for a cure for the thousands of people diagnosed each year with one of 70 life-threatening blood cancers or other blood disorders. Yet 70% of patients who need a transplant to do not have a matched donor in their family, and thus, must rely upon the national registry to find a life-saving match. Maintaining federal support to expand the registry and increase the number of high quality cord blood units available through the registry remains critically important.
